What You Need To Know About Cleaning A Grinder
Learning how to clean a grinder is so easy. All it takes is some basic cleaning supplies, a moment to sit and check over the grinder and a little time to allow it dry properly.
So if you have never cleaned a grinder, now may be the perfect time to gather it up and get to cleaning.
Once you have cleaned the grinder, you will notice quite a difference in the quality of your marijuana.
Removing all the old, and yes – stale, marijuana from the grinder will make a world of difference. So let’s get started and learn how to clean a grinder.

- Small, soft-bristled brush (IE. makeup brush)
- Old toothbrush
- Paper plate
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Bowl or large glass
- Quart Size zippered storage bag
- Towel or rag
- Freezer access (for deep cleaning)
How To Clean A Grinder
First, disassemble the grinder and place all the pieces on a paper plate. Then remove all the excess marijuana build up from within the grinder.
Use the toothpicks to do this; while some people may use cotton swabs or Q-Tips ®, I don’t like to get the fibers of the cotton in the grinder. Use an old toothbrush to help aid in getting the “weed” dust and particles out of every crevice.
Put the marijuana pieces you’ve harvested into a small container.
Cleaning the screen part of the grinder is where you need to take your time and do not only properly, but also carefully, use the old toothbrush to get in between all the mesh.
An old makeup brush is very helpful when working on cleaning the grinder. You can brush away all the excess dust without damaging the screen.
Once you have all the components of the grinder cleaned good, place aside for a moment. Open the quart size zippered plastic bag, place the empty bag in a bowl or large glass.
Fill about half way with the isopropyl alcohol and place all the grinder pieces into the bag. Once you have the bag full of the alcohol and grinder, decide if you need to add more alcohol.
You want to make sure every piece is completely submerged in the alcohol. Zip the bag and let the grinder sit in the bag of alcohol for about 20-30 minutes.
After the grinder has been in the alcohol for the allotted time, remove each piece one at a time. Using a toothpick or cotton swab, carefully remove any newly loosen pieces of marijuana from every piece.
If there are some stubborn fragments of marijuana on the grinder, you can use the toothbrush to remove now that the alcohol has softened them up.
Rinse each piece well under warm water and place on a towel to dry. (You can use a hair dryer to speed up this process if necessary.) Make sure the grinder is completely dry before using it to grind new marijuana.
How To Deep Clean A Grinder
You will follow steps 1 and 2 above.
For deep cleaning you will not place the grinder pieces into the bag of alcohol. You will re-assemble the grinder and place in a freezer for a minimum of thirty minutes.
Once you take it out of the freezer, the pieces should be clumped together and with a little elbow grease of scrubbing (using the toothpicks, toothbrush or cotton swabs) more of the marijuana pieces should come off easier.
From this step, continue on with step 3 from above.
